Be Considerate Travelers

Be Considerate Travelers

Now more than ever we should all try to be considerate travelers.  Traveling can be a trying experience these days with increased security checks, baggage restrictions, and crowded planes.  Rude or obnoxious passengers just make it more tedious for all of us.

We've said all along that you should be patient and flexible and things will work out.  But what are some of the things that we think you should really NOT do?

First of all don't raise your voice or use obscenities.  Some people think that the "squeaky wheel" is the one that gets greased.  Not true.

It's usually considerate travelers who get the most help.  The airline service personnel we know give those squeaky wheels just the service that they are entitled to and no more.  Yelling probably won't get you a first class seat assignment or get that baggage fee waived.

Certainly don't be foolish enough to raise your voice at security... that's sure to slow you down with more checks.... and slow the line down for everyone.

It's a little silly to threaten that you'll never fly that airline again or stay in that hotel again.  The airline agents and hotel clerks have heard that all before.  They are doing the best they can to help you, and you shouldn't be blaming them... and besides, you probably WILL fly that airline the next time you get a good airfare on them or stay in that hotel the next time you get a great rate.... you're not fooling anyone.  You're venting for the wrong reasons, and they'll probably want to help you even less because of it.

We shouldn't have to tell you not to joke around about guns or bombs or explosives in underwear or anything at all like that.  No one at any airport will be amused... they will call the police.  Believe it or not... some of this still happens!  Haven't they been reading the news?

Don't drink too much.  You know that's true if you're driving, but it also applies when you're flying.  If the agent thinks you are too inebriated to travel, they can deny you boarding.  Flight attendants stop serving liquor to passengers who have had one too many.  Sometimes it gets to be a problem.

My husband was once asked by a flight attendant if he would mind changing seats and letting another lady sit next to me.  The man sitting next to her was intoxicated and trying to make passes at her.  Imagine his surprise when he woke up to make another pass and found my hubby there!

Don't try to cut in line because you're in a hurry.  You don't like drivers that do that, and no one likes travelers who do that.  Considerate travelers don't leave their manners at home.  Remember... "Do unto others..."  If you just behave like your mother taught you to, it will make travel better for you and for all of your fellow travelers.
