Road Trip Tips

The open highways and the endless possibilities they represents make a road trip one of the most exciting ways to spend a vacation. Whether you are going with your sweetheart, your entire family or your best friends, you will find it a great opportunity for making wonderful memories with special people in your life.

Unlike any other types of vacation, you don't have to chase after your transportation's schedule. You don't have to worry about the cost of excess baggage. And, most importantly, you can take a break from traveling and make a stop-over anytime when you feel like it. In short, there's plenty of room for adjustments and modifications along the way.

The only downside is that you will be taking care of almost everything when going on a road trip. So, you need to make sufficient preparation to ensure that everything will turn out easily and smoothly. Here are some road trip tips that have done me good countless of times in the past, hopefully they will be of some help to you too:

Tune up your vehicle. Many of us focus too much on hotel reservations, stop-over locations and food supplies that we almost always forget about our car's condition. It bears stressing that the success of a road trip rests mostly on our vehicle's capacity to take you to your destination without a major breakdown. Just because your car is running fine doesn't automatically mean it's in shape for long distance driving. So, make an appointment with a mechanic and have it checked.

Know where you are going and how to get there. After you have picked  a destination, get a good road map and pick a route. The shortest route may not always be the best choice. You may want to choose one that has the most attractions that you want to check out on the way or one with plenty of interesting restaurants you've always wanted to try.

Road conditions, availability of accommodations and picturesque views are some factors that you may want to consider as well. Also, you may want to identify your stop over locations in advance such as where to eat, gas up and use the restrooms and facilities.

Be cash ready. Never assume that your credit card will serve you just fine wherever you are going. There are still plenty of small towns that do not trust plastic. So, do your research and find out how far your cards will take you!  Find out how much budget you need for the trip and how much of it you need to pay in cash. It will also serve you best to find out beforehand ATM locations along your route of choice.

Prepare for emergencies. You do not want to leave without a fully stocked emergency medicine kit. Load it up with antiseptics, bandages and painkillers. You also want to prepare the right medications for travel related illnesses such as diarrhea, motion sickness and allergic reactions. Also, note down emergency numbers that you may need on the road such as vehicle rescue and police assistance. Finally, ask your mechanic what vehicle supplies you may need to bring on your trip and pack those up as well.
